Explanation for the term "enzymes activity units"

A great digestive enzyme formulation should be designed to help digest the food we eat and to help clean the bloodstream. It must be well rounded in protease (to digest protein), amylase (to digest carbohydrates), and lipase (to digest fats) to be truly effective, because 95% of the food we eat is protein, carbohydrates, fat. Protease, amylase, and lipase are the three most important ingredients in any digestive enzyme formulation.

Enzyme labels can be confusing, every product seems to be labeled using a different system. It may seem that there is no way to determine what makes a quality product.

Enzyme products are typically labeled in one of three ways:

  1. descending order by weight with no measurements listed
  2. by milligram weights
  3. by activity units

The first label reveals nothing about the product and should most often be by-passed. Likewise, milligram weights reveal virtually nothing about the potency of the enzymes. Activity units are the only way to identify the potency of the product.

The Enzyme Plus™ table of ingredients shows many different enzyme products. Look closely at the amount of protease, amylase and lipase in the formulation. The manufacturer is using the correct FCC (Food Chemical Codex) labeling. This labeling certifies that the enzymes have been thoroughly tested for activity and potency. Potency is expressed in units of activity - not by weight. The units of activity are based on the Food Chemical Codex, set forth by the National Academy of Sciences and accepted by the American food industry.

Enzymes are similar to certain vitamins in that they have a measurable activity level. When purchasing vitamin A, do you look for a product with 5 milligrams of vitamin A or 5000 IU? Obviously, the IU measurement is more meaningful and when products are compared identifies the more potent formulation. The same is true with enzyme products. National Enzyme Company endorses the use of published assays such as those found in the Foods Chemical Codex (FCC) for the measurement of plant-based enzymes.

Why should you only consider purchasing enzyme products labeled with activity units? Unfortunately, no standards currently exist to define which activity units are the most appropriate. Comparison of different enzyme labels shows that any one enzyme may be listed by many different activities. For example, proteases may be listed with HUT, USP, ASP, HU, SAP, PU, NU, BTU, MCU, LAP, SAU or still another activity unit declaration. While many of these are valid assays, methods are used to artificially create the appearance of a high activity product.

The Enzyme Technical Association recently published recommendations that enzyme supplements be labeled utilizing assay units from published compendial sources such as the Foods Chemical Codex (FCC). The National Academy of Science publishes the FCC to provide standard assay methods for food ingredients. Below is a table listing enzymes commonly found in digestive supplements and the appropriate FCC assay unit.

  • Amylase DU
  • Protease HUT
  • Glucoamylase AGU
  • Bromelain PU
  • Cellulase CU
  • Papain PU
  • Lactase ALU
  • Lipase LU
  • Alpha-Galactosidase AGSU

Enzymes are catalysts. It is the nature of a catalyst to accelerate a chemical reaction without being destroyed. A small amount of any catalyst can have a great impact.

Each person presents a different environment in which an enzyme supplement must function. This along with the catalytic nature of enzymes mean that no one single enzyme product is perfect for everyone.

A basic plant-based digestive product generally contains four enzymes: protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase.

Minimum levels shown to support digestion for most individuals are 4000 HUT of protease, 2000 DU of amylase, 40 LU of lipase and 40 CU of cellulase. Numerous products are available at higher potencies and these may be beneficial for you. Also, many health practitioners recommend starting with a low potency product and working up in potency until you find the level that matches your body’s needs. Another important aspect in choosing the right supplement for your needs is to consider which enzymes are in the product.

Rather than just increased activity, you may want to look for the inclusion of additional enzymes. Different enzymes work on different substances, so the inclusion of additional enzymes can broaden the activity of the product. A full-spectrum product may include multiple proteolytic enzymes to break down proteins and multiple carbohydrases to digest starches and sugars and modify fiber. This is what makes Enzyme Plus™ so special.

Side effects of Betaine hydrochloride (HCl)

Enzyme Plus™ contains 150 mg of Betaine hydrochloride (Betaine HCl) per capsule.

You should not take more than 650 mg of Betaine HCl without the recommendation of a physician. Individuals with a history of peptic ulcers, gastritis, or gastrointestinal symptoms - particularly heartburn - should see a doctor before taking betaine HCl. Too much Betaine HCl can burn the lining of the stomach. If a burning sensation is experienced, Betaine HCl should be immediately discontinued. Betaine should not be taken in conjunction with any other gastrointestinal drugs or products.

As with any nutritional supplement, if you are pregnant or lactating or currently taking any medication, please consult your physician or health care practitioner prior to using this product.

Keep out of reach of children.

What makes Enzyme Plus™ different?

Enzyme Plus™ was formulated specifically to provide the full spectrum of nutrients known to assist the body in breaking down foods, in order to aid in the digestion process.

Enzyme Plus™ has been newly formulated with plant enzymes which increase nutritional absorption by approximately 300% to 500%.

Facts about enzymes and digestion

Individuals are born with a "bank account" of pancreatic enzymes, which are necessary for digestion. Raw foods also contain vital enzymes which make them easier to digest. Every time you eat dead, over-cooked, processed, canned or frozen foods your body must produce the missing enzymes in order to complete digestion.

When this takes place over years, a deficiency of these enzymes can occur, making digestion and subsequent absorption of nutrients difficult.

Do you often suffer from heartburn or an upset stomach - particularly after you eat? Do you feel bloated or gassy, or have irregular bowel movements?

If you have poor digestion, you can't assimilate the nutrients you take in and the body becomes deficient. Furthermore, undigested food can become putrefied within the body, which results in the buildup of toxins. Supplemeting with digestive enzymes supports the digestive process and in doing so helps prevent the buildup of these unwanted substances.

Key ingredients of Enzyme Plus™:

Papain:
A digestive enzyme derived from the Papaya fruit, capable of cleaving proteins and peptides into free form amino acids, necessary for effective digestion. Papain also is useful in eliminating thread worms and round worms in the gastrointestinal tract by simply digesting them.
Amylase:
Amylase works great for digesting starches and carbohydrates and may be useful for individuals with gluten sensitivities. This family of alpha, beta and gamma digestive enzymes is responsible for starch-splitting or amylolytic activity that cleaves starch molecules and related polysaccharides. Interestingly amylase is also partially effective in destroying the reactivity of histamines, a potent mediator of allergic reactions which causes the general symptoms experienced during an allergic reaction.
Lipase:
Lipase is an enzyme that digests fats, and helps to maintain correct gall bladder function. Specifically, lipase is a family of naturally occurring enzymes produced by the body to aid in the digestion of fats and most notable lipids. As such, these constitute any of the fat-splitting or lipolytic enzymes, all of which cleave a fatty acid residue from the glycerol residue in a neutral fat or a phospholipid. Lipase is an enzyme (or more exactly a group of enzymes) belonging to the esterases. Lipase is found widely distributed in the plant world (beans and legumes), as well as in molds, bacteria, milk and mild products, and in animal tissues, especially in the pancreas. Lipase controls the amount of fat being synthesized and that which is burned in the body, reducing adipose tissue (fat stores). In sufficient quantites, Lipase can help move fat-stores to be burned as fuel. Indeed, Lipase is a rate-determining enzyme which will not only activates the burning of stored body fat but also effectively inhibits fatty acid synthesis, or fat storage.
Protease:
Protease is a digestive enzyme that digests proteins and may be helpful for individuals with food allergies. This family of enzymes has the ability to breakdown or hydrolyse protein. Protease is a descriptive term for proteolytic enzymes, both endopeptidases (eg., pepsin, cathespins, papain) and exopeptidases (eg., carboxy- and aminopeptidases, dipeptidases.)
Betaine Hydrochloride:
Betaine is a vitamin-type compound found in grains and other foods. Betaine hydrochloride or Betaine HCl is the acidic form of betaine. Betaine hydrochloride is primarily prescribed as a supplemental source of hydrochloric acid for people who have difficulty digesting due to a lack of stomach acid.

Lower than normal levels of gastric acid secretion in the digestive tract increases the likelihood and severity of certain bacterial and parasitic infections in the intestinal tract. Most people have enough gastric acid to destroy bacteria. Those that do not have enough hydrochloride acid in their digestive track can suffer from bacterial colonization of the stomach.
