The Daily Values are standard values developed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use on food labels. In creating the Daily Values, the FDA first established two sets of reference values. The first set, the Reference Daily Intakes (RDI), are for protein, vitamins, and minerals and reflect average allowances based on the RDA.

The second set, the Daily Reference Values (DRV), are for nutrients and food components, such as fat and fiber, that do not have an established RDA but do have important relationships with health.

Together, the RDI and DRV make up the Daily Values used on food labels.

+ Daily values not established.

Healthy prostate function is an important, yet often overlooked area for men - typically until it becomes a problem. The best time to help the body deal with this situation is before a serious problem occurs.

Facts about the prostate

Chronic inflammation of the prostate is the single greatest reason why men over 50 visit a doctor. This condition can be uncomfortable and annoying. After age 50, 80 percent of men have enlarged prostate problems, according to Patrick Walsh, MD, Director of Urology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

The prostate gland sits very close to the urinary tract. When inflammations of the prostate occurs it can make urination difficult, frequently preventing the person from fully voiding their bladder. This condition, if it persists, can lead to further irritation and potential infection.

Maintaining prostate health is important and specific herbs, vitamins, minerals and amino acids can help support the prostate function.

Two such herbs are:

  • Saw Palmetto
  • Pygeum Africanum

Both these herbs have shown a significant, positive impact in clinical trials in promoting urinary tract and prostate health.

Key ingredients of Pro Flow™:

Saw Palmetto:
Saw Palmetto is an herb that has been shown in clinical studies to have an important role in maintaining a healthy prostate. Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens, sometimes referred to as sabal in Europe) grows naturally in the Southeast United States, such as Georgia, Mississippi, and particularly Florida. Saw Palmetto is not the only herb that has an influence on the prostate gland. Several other herbs and plant compounds that are potentially useful in maintaining a healthy prostate gland including pygeum, stinging nettle, isoflavones such as genistein and daidzein, rye pollen, phytosterols such as sitosterol, and carotenoids such as lycopene.

It appears that urinary symptoms resulting from mild-to-moderate prostate enlargement respond more readily to Saw Palmetto than symptoms due to severe enlargement. If often takes several weeks or months for the effects of saw palmetto and other herbs to be fully appreciated. Saw Palmetto and herbs have much fewer side effects than drugs used for prostate enlargement.
Pygeum Africanum:
Pygeum has been found to be effective for treating prostate gland disorder, specifically, benign prostatic hypertrophy. It has proven useful in treating both the symptoms and the causes of swollen prostate. Pygeum contains 3 groups of lipid soluble components that have effects on prostate disease. The first includes a number of phytosterols (naturally occurring plant steroids), including ß-sitosterol, ß-sitosterol-3-0glucoside and ß-sitosterone, all which demonstrate antiinflammatory properties. The next compounds of significance are a chemical family of pentacyclic-triterpenoids including ursolic acid, 2-α-hydroxyursolic acid, oleanolic acid, crataegolic acid, and friedelin, all of which demonstrate anti-edemic properties, further reducing the potential of swelling. Lastly, pygeum contains some linear alcohols including n-tetra-cosanol, n-do-cosanol which has the additional benefit in acting to lower cholesterol.

Functions of Vitamin E (D-Alpha Tocopherol):

  1. Plays an important role in cellular respiration of muscles, especially the cardiac muscle
  2. Prevents peroxide formation by being an anti-oxidant
  3. Protects all the other fat soluble vitamins against oxidation
  4. Reduces scar tissue formation both internally and externally. This is why creams and ointments containing vitamin E are especially effective
  5. Increases formation of new blood vessels around damaged areas
  6. Stimulates urine secretion, hence has a lowering effect on some instances of blood pressure
  7. Provides protection against poisonous substances such as inhalants and internal by-products of metabolism
  8. Assist in normalizing blood viscosity
  9. Retards muscle degeneration
  10. Protects and ensures permeability of the capillary system

Deficiency Symptoms of Vitamin E (D-Alpha Tocopherol)

  1. First clinical sign of deficiency is the rupturing of the red blood cells
  2. Faulty absorption of fat and fat soluble vitamins. Evidence shows a link between this condition and the development of cystic fibrosis and inflammation of the pancreas
  3. Retarded growth in children
  4. Nutritional muscular dystrophy
  5. Swelling of the cardiac muscles, which can become necrotic
  6. Women severely deficient experience frequent miscarriages, as well as premature births
  7. Angina pectoris
  8. Menstrual discomfort and PMS
  9. In males, a reduced mobility of spermatozoa
  10. In females, uterine degeneration, and in some cases, sterility

Functions of Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid):

  1. The most important function of Vitamin C in the human body is in the formation of collagen protein. Collagen is the glue for specialized tissues that hold us together, such as skin, cartilage, tendon and bone
  2. Speeds up the healing of wounds
  3. Antihistamine action
  4. Maintains strength in blood vessels
  5. Fights bacterial and viral infections
  6. Promotes formation of hemoglobin
  7. Aids in absorption of iron from intestinal tract
  8. Converts folic acid to folinic acid
  9. Antioxidant action, protection many other valuable nutrients such as thiamine, riboflavin, vitamins A and E, and pantothenic acid against damage from oxidation
  10. Diuretic action on body cells
  11. Aids in the metabolism of the amino acids, phenylalanine tyrosine and tryptophan
  12. Helps the adrenals in the secretion of hormones

Deficiency Symptoms of Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid):

  1. Skin bruising; bleeding gums
  2. Shortness of breath; impaired digestion
  3. Anemia
  4. Joint pains
  5. Increased healing time of surface wounds
  6. Breaks in capillary walls resulting in clots
  7. Excessive hair loss
  8. Scurvy

Functions of Vitamin B-6 (Pyridoxine HCl)

  1. Necessary for proper assimilation of Vitamin B-12
  2. Aids in the production of hydrochloric acid
  3. Required in the metabolism of many amino acids
  4. Involved in the metabolism of fats, especially the unsaturated fatty acids
  5. Necessary for the conversion of tryptophan to niacin
  6. Helps to maintain the sodium/potassium balance
  7. Facilitates glycogen conversion to glucose
  8. Must be present for the production of antibodies and red blood cells
  9. Involved in proper synthesis and activity of DNA and RNA

Deficiency Symptoms of Vitamin B-6 (Pyridoxine HCl)

  1. Dermatitis
  2. Numbness of hands and feet
  3. Over production of xanthurenic acid (green-colored urine)
  4. Low blood sugar and low glucose tolerance
  5. Cramps in the extremities
  6. Dizziness, nausea, vomiting
  7. Kidney stones
  8. Edema
  9. Arthritis
